Wi-Fi®

Wi-Fi® is a wireless networking technology that allows digital devices to be connected wirelessly. This is known as a wireless area network (WAN).

Wi-Fi is commonly used to connect laptops, PDAs, computers, games consoles etc., to the internet. To establish a internet enabled wireless area network there needs to be a Wi-Fi router providing internet access and a wireless adapter within the end user’s digital device (laptop, mobile phone). Most new laptops, PCs, media devices and phones come with a wireless adapter built in.

Public WANs, known as Wi-Fi hotspots, are becoming more readily available in places such as coffee shops, bars, libraries, airports and hotels, enabling more versatile use of digital devices such as mobile phones and laptops and therefore more flexible working and communication habits. There are plans in place to turn entire towns or cities into Wi-Fi hotspots. One of the advantages of wireless technology is that it can be used in areas where wires cannot easily be installed such as listed / historic buildings or outdoor spaces.
